Venice introduces an “entrance tax”, and then admission to the city only on pre-order

The Minister of Tourism of Italy, Gian Marco Centinayo, lashed out at the Venetian authorities for their initiative to introduce new fees from tourists …

Venice introduces an “entrance tax”, and then admission to the city only on pre-order
The news is really scandalous – if you call things in your own words, the Venetians gathered to block access to their city for those who come without a big bribe. But the islanders habitually dismissed the angry cries from Rome, they say, this Centinayo doesn’t love us and nothing can be done about it. A long time for tourists to remind you that they are guests in Venice and nothing more.

The position of the Venetians rather desperate than defiant. The ancient city has long been turned into a courtyard for tourists from all over the world, who in the era of globalism completely ceased to respect any traditions and interests of others. The behavior of visitors is often different than boorish is not called, but the main problem of Venice is that in a limited space, everything is in sight. Do not hide the problem, do not push into the corner – only the city spends about 40 million euros per year only for the removal of garbage left over from many revelers. While he earns, according to official data, on tourist excursions only 30 million euros.

In Venice, there are already prohibitions for travelers, such as sitting on the ground, carrying and, moreover, drinking alcohol on the street, lying on benches, standing on bridges for a long time, etc. Fines are cruel, up to 450 euros for misconduct. Against this background, the initiative to introduce an “entrance tax” in the amount of 3 euros seems just another annoying trifle, but not everything is so simple. 3 euros – the minimum price tag, and on holidays it will increase to 6 euros, and even up to 10 euros at the peak of city traffic. You will have to pay, even if you looked into Venice for a couple of hours, passing through.

The logic of the Venetian authorities is obvious – the new tax will hit on spontaneous guests, casual travelers and event tourism lovers who are accustomed to freely roam across the eurozone without any responsibility. But the old city can not safely take a hundred or two thousand fans of some pop stars, if it flies the idea to arrange a performance in Venice right now. And, on the contrary, tourists obedient and desirable will be protected from these requisitions.

Crowds of people in Venice are common
The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brunyaro, clarified that we cannot simply close the entrance to the city, so we will let everyone in, including the free-riders. But then he promised them “huge problems”, without specifying the details. He added about the desire to introduce a system of pre-orders for a visit to Venice by 2022, so that the authorities could analyze and predict the number of tourists and the load on the city’s infrastructure. Everything is simple – you, as usual, book a hotel room, confirm your desire and availability of financial opportunities to spend so many days in Venice and pay only the standard tourist tax.

“Entry tax” will begin to collect from May 1, 2019 and at first promise “condescending” to treat those who refuse to pay. “We are not going to militarize the city, but we must make it clear to visitors of Venice that planning trips is in the interests of both the citizens and themselves,” Brunyaro said. And about a third of the fees will go to fund the expansion of police officers and increased security measures. It turns out that in the near future, tourists will have to choose – to go to Venice “on request” or to risk a wallet and troubles with the Carabinieri.
